Good evening
The first effective coronavirus vaccine which, it is said, can prevent more than 90% of people from getting Covid-19 has been announced by Pfizer and BioNTech. They have described today as a "great day for science and humanity". The companies plan to apply for emergency approval to use the vaccine. Locally Health minister Robin Swann has asked the public 'not to let guard down' despite progress in mass vaccine'.
With the four-week circuit break lockdown that has forced the closure of much of the hospitality sector in Northern Ireland due to end on Friday, Stormont ministers today adjourned a meeting to seek further data on the likely impact of certain relaxations.
It had been widely reported at the weekend that much of the hospitality industry might be allowed to reopen but without alcohol sales. Top NI restaurateur Michael Deane has said he was 'appalled' at the suggestion. "If we couldn't sell alcohol it would not be viable for us to open," said Mr. Deane.
Despite the more optimistic news today, sadly, we still have to report that ten more people have died after testing positive for COVID-19. According to the latest dashboard nine people died within the last 24 hours and another person died outside that time frame.
