A letter from the editor of News Letter

Dear reader,

Here we are, almost two months into the lockdown, and life as we knew it has changed in so many respects.

As I wrote in my previous monthly note, I couldn't have envisaged publishing a website from home and producing a newspaper on a daily basis while working remotely from my colleagues, but it has become a reality as far as the News Letter's editorial team is concerned.

No member of our team has spent any time in our offices since lockdown was announced by the prime minister back in late March. It's a change that has brought many challenges but I'm proud of the way my team has responded in continuing to publish the News Letter to a high standard.

I am delighted to report that more people than ever are reading our material and that is very encouraging. I told you that we enjoyed a record audience online during March, and we also saw huge numbers read our stories during April.

I'm also delighted to say that our online subscriber base enjoyed by far its most significant increase during April. Thank you to each and every one of you who have signed up. Your support is absolutely crucial in the News Letter continuing its long tradition of reporting the news accurately and fairly.

Of course it has been difficult to maintain a positive outlook on life during these unprecedented times. The number of deaths in the UK relating to Covid-19 has exceeded 32,000, with more than 400 people having lost their lives in Northern Ireland.

Where possible we have tried to report on positive news, on the acts of kindness and generosity shown by people around Northern Ireland. For instance, more than 30,000 people last month read this story about the Orange Order's call for people across the Province to join the Thursday night applause for the NHS.

While the News Letter supported the introduction of the UK-wide lockdown we also recognise the need for the country to gradually reopen because businesses and people's livelihoods are also at stake. In one of my favourite recent articles, our deputy editor Ben Lowry highlighted the example of Sweden as having tackled the coronavirus relatively successfully despite not going into full lockdown.

Boris Johnson has started outlining the UK's path out of lockdown and the NI Executive is set to do likewise.

Going forward, we will continue bringing you the best news, opinion and sports articles from our team of writers.

In these difficult times, in which many of our local businesses - and key advertisers - are suffering, it is even more vital that people do support us with subscriptions today so we can keep them informed, connected and entertained for many more tomorrows.
